Joining data and decision-making in the Welsh public sector

1 February 2022

In CDPS’s latest knowledge sharing webinar, we looked at how data can power better decision-making in the Welsh public sector and beyond, based on the Welsh Government’s 12th Digital Service Standard.

That standard says: ‘We should constantly measure how well services are performing for users. Teams should use performance data to find and prioritise improvements.’

‘Data should be easy to interpret’

We heard from John Morris, Head of Data and Geography at Welsh Government. He emphasised that data should be easy to interpret, to know who you are targeting and the importance of being able to challenge data. He gave examples of where the Welsh Government had used data to map drive times, town activity and flood risk.

We then heard from Jeremy Griffith, Chief Operating Officer for COVID Vaccine Wales. He described how he and his team had used data to predict hospital bed capacity and the impact of vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

Finally, Suzanne Draper, Head of Insight and Engagement, Data Cymru, discussed the support and training they were offering with their Databasic Cymru and Inform and Inspire programmes.
