Knowledge sharing – Digital Strategy for Wales
12 February 2021
This week saw the third of our knowledge sharing webinars, set up to provide as many opportunities as possible for knowledge sharing, learning and engagement. The topic of this month’s webinar was the Digital Strategy for Wales. It was great to see over 50 people from across sectors in Wales get together to find out more about the strategy and what it means for public service delivery in Wales.
Session overview
To start the session, we were joined by the Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, Lee Waters. Lee made a clear case for change citing some of his own personal experiences of accessing public services in Wales and telling the session that ‘If we allow disconnect with the modern world, we are creating a space where public services lose their value’.
We were then joined by Welsh Government CDO Glyn Jones who provided an overview of the draft strategy and its six missions. Glyn covered the outcomes each mission was setting out to achieve and highlighted the importance of collaboration in delivering real change.
Before we moved to questions, Sally Meecham, Interim Chief Executive of the Centre for Digital Public Services, talked about the progress CDPS has made to date and how the strategy will be backed up by an action plan focusing on delivery.
Discussion and questions
In the discussion that followed we covered a wide range of topics including:
- delivery of the strategy, taking the high-level principles and turning them into actions that result in change
- the role of the third sector and service providers such as housing
- the role of SMEs and the skills our workforce will need to be able to support delivery of the strategy
- Welsh language in AI, how we ensure our technology meets the needs of the people of Wales
Thank you to everyone who joined us and took part in the conversation.
What’s next?
Welsh Government is now reviewing the feedback from the strategy which has been shared through a series of blog posts ahead of its final publication. Work is happening now to create action plans against each mission with a set of actions and identified owners.
