Knowledge sharing – making the right technology choices
11 June 2021
The topic of this month’s webinar was making the right technology choices. It was great to see people from across Wales and beyond get together to find out more about how we make the right technology choices to deliver better public services in Wales.
Session overview
We were joined by Dai Vaughan who is a member of the Centre’s advisory panel and has UK wide experience of public sector technical implementation. Dai talked about the technical choices we make, how to future proof them and managing legacy IT contracts.
Local government Chief Digital Officer Sam Hall provided an overview of the challenges for technology in the public sector and what needs to change. Sam reflected on the lack of flexibility and the need to make brave choices to be more effective.
Finally, we heard from Mike Ogonovsky, Chief Digital Officer for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Mike gave an overview of the work he led around video consultations and the impact of COVID-19 on progress, take up and culture.
Discussion and questions
In the discussion that followed we covered a wide range of topics including:
- skills gaps and the need for supplier management, tech and leadership skills
- the need for both culture change and technical capability
- approaches to spend control
- readiness for digital transformation
Thank you to everyone who joined us and took part in the conversation.
