Use of cookies and other technologies
This Notice lays out how and why we use cookies on the CDPS site and offers resources that will allow you to make an informed decision regarding the acceptance, rejection or deletion of any cookies that we use.
By using our website, you consent to our use of cookies, so we recommend that you read through the information below. This cookies policy may change at any time, so please check it regularly.
A cookie is a small file of letters and numbers which often includes an anonymised, unique identifier. This means that it can be used to identify you without revealing your personal information. When you visit a website, it asks permission to store a cookie in the cookies section of your hard drive. Cookies are widely used on the internet to make websites work, to make them work more efficiently, or to provide information about your usage of the site to the site owner or other third parties. For example, if you add items to a shopping basket, a cookie allows the website to remember what items you’re buying, or if you log in to a website, a cookie may recognise you later so that you do not have to put in your password again.
How do we use cookies?
We use cookies to improve the way our website works. We also use third-party cookies set by Google Analytics to review our site functionality,
Third-party cookies
A third-party cookie is one that is associated with a different domain or website than the one that you visit. For example, on this site, we use third-party cookies built by Google to enable website analytics, but as our site is not on the Google domain, this makes their cookies “third-party” cookies. The Google Analytics cookie will recognise and count the number of people who visit our site, as well as providing other information such as how long visitors stay, where they move to on our site, and what pages receive the most visits. We cannot directly control how Google cookies behave.
Use of Mailchimp on www.digitalpublicservices.gov.wales
This privacy notice specifically refers to our use of data collected through the offer of inclusion in communications lists, currently the CDPS newsletter and participation in one or more Community of Practice groups.
For the inclusion in either or all lists the only information captured is an email address and by definition of being on the list, a GDPR consent marker. The GDPR consent marker is set on a widget, which then triggers an opt-in email to the user. Only by clicking an approval link in this email will the users address be added to the email list. The record will be retained until the user clicks the unsubscribe link found on all emails – or otherwise contacts CDPS via another avenue.
Purpose of processing
The email address provided will be used to periodically email and maintain contact with those who have opted in, only for the purpose for which they provided their email address.
Each email address will be held for as long as the participant wishes to be part of the mailing list, after which time they can chose to unsubscribe from the list by clicking an unsubscribe link which is provided on any previous emails.
Lawful basis for processing
By submitting their email address, the participant is then opting in to receive follow up emails for that topic only, individuals are providing consent to our processing of their personal data for the purpose specified.
Who we share data with
The data is stored by our email service supplier, Mailchimp. This information is stored only on EU Servers and is not shared, sold, or used by anyone outside Mailchimp or CDPS.

How are cookies used on digitalpublicservices.gov.wales?
Cookies on digitalpublicservices.gov.wales (CDPS) do many different tasks, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, storing your preferences, and generally improving your experience of the site. Cookies make the interaction between you and our website faster and easier. If we did not use cookies, it would think you were a new visitor every time you moved to a new page on the site.
Some websites will also use cookies to enable them to target their advertising or marketing messages based, for example, on your location and/or browsing habits. CDPS does NOT do this.
Cookies which are set by digitalpublicservices.gov.wales are called ‘first-party cookies’, while those that may be set by other websites who run content on the page you are viewing are called ‘third-party cookies’.
How does digitalpublicservices.gov.wales use cookies?
Cookies are small text files sent to your computer or mobile device by the websites that you visit. They help make websites work better and provide information to the owners of the site. For instance, we use language cookies to know what language you would like the web site displayed to you in, we also use YouTube cookies to embed videos in pages and Google Analytics cookies to track users’ behaviour whilst on the site.
By understanding how people use our site, we can improve the navigation and content to better meet people’s needs. The information collected by GOV.WALES includes IP address, pages visited, browser and operating system. The data will not be used to identify any user personally.
We use cookies to enable you to move around the site and to provide certain basic features. Without a cookie the site would not remember which language you were using to view it, or which page of the search results you were on.
We don’t sell the information collected by cookies, nor do we disclose the information to third parties, except where required by law (for example to government bodies and law enforcement agencies).
We use Mailchimp to handle our email mailing lists and subscriptions. We also use Mailchimp to send emails to those that have opted in for each topic or need. Mailchimp also places cookies to function and improve user experience.
