The Welsh Language Commissioner has published a code of practice in line with their primary aim to promote and facilitate the use of the Welsh language, in line with the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011.
The measure gives legal effect to the official status of the Welsh language by enabling the imposition of these standards.
Included in the code of practice is a section on service design standards which covers online services and correspondence.
This will form one part of the organisation’s wider obligations to design and deliver bilingual digital products and services in Wales.
Our recommendation
Your products and services should meet point 2 on the Digital Service Standard for Wales – be bilingual by design.
As a public body, you should:
- use this code of practice to support your design process, including any parts of the journey that may require correspondence
CDPS won’t be monitoring your compliance but point 2 of the Digital Service Standard for Wales sets the expectation that services are designed in both Welsh and English.
CDPS will expect to see the approach of a digital team to design bilingually in our service assessment and service review.
