Hype cycle

Summary

This diagram shows the ‘Hype Cycle for Artificial Intelligence’ produced by Garner. This aims to illustrate how technologies evolve over time. It's designed to help us understand whether a technology is still experimental, overhyped, or mature enough for real-world use.

You'll be able to see Generative AI has passed the peak and is heading into this trough of disillusionment. This is because of some of the challenges facing AI, which you may have already seen or heard about, like:

  • ethical and societal concerns
  • limited security best practices
  • negative uses like deep fakes and disinformation

This isn't a bad thing though. Historically, many technologies have followed this pattern. As technologies moves down into the Trough, we’ll probably see some tools fade away while others improve and become more useful.

Because of this, the general advice to organisations is to focus on areas surrounding AI, like:

  • governance
  • risk ownership
  • safety
  • mitigation of technical debt

We'll touch these throughout the course, before looking at examples of how AI could be used in a public sector context.
