There are many areas of Wales where woodland clearance has taken place. These areas might contain soil and ecosystems well-suited for tree growth. Finding them could support delivery of government targets surrounding woodland regeneration schemes.
The Welsh Government Data Science Unit has been training a computer vision model to predict these areas of woodland with the support of OS Maps from the 1840s.
In this webinar, Evie Brown, Data Scientist from the unit, will provide an overview of the project, including:
- a summary of the data source and processing steps to create labelled training data
- an introduction to computer vision models
- reasoning behind the type of model chosen for this project (instance segmentation)
- analysis of the model predictions across Wales
Evie will also discuss the next steps for the project. This will include applying this approach on a multi-label dataset to identify different types of trees.
This webinar is for individuals working in the public sector in Wales.
