Each assessment will measure your service against the 12 points in the Digital Service Standard for Wales. It will highlight the areas where you are doing well and provide you with recommendations to improve.

What we’ve done so far

The team have been speaking to service assessors and those who have undergone a service assessment in UK Government to understand how they deliver and run service assessments.

We’re identifying what can be reused in Wales and what we need to design to create a scalable delivery model for Wales. We are working with Welsh Government on a design workshop to better understand how service assessments could work within their digital teams.

The value of service assessments

Good product or service

For users:

  • the product/service/thing works
  • can do what I need to do using it
  • it isn't hard to use
  • it's not intrusive
  • only use one channel to use it

For teams:

  • their work is validated by peers
  • get advice and support to improve their product/service/thing
  • are supported with wider challenges they face (e.g. panel can help them make a case with stakeholders)
  • confident they are ready to proceed
  • learn about what else might be happening that can help (e.g. be connected with other teams who may have solved the same problem)

For assessors:

  • find out about what else is going
  • learning
  • build connections that help them solve their problems
  • give back – help others to improve
  • further support the delivery of good products/services/things for end users
  • Influence and support wider digital transformation across the public sector
  • Facilitate – delivery of services that meet our users’ needs
  • Enables them to be better prepared for their next assessment

For policy and Welsh Government:

  • confidence that a good product/service/built that meets user and business and policy needs
  • confidence that the team is doing a good job
  • confidence that contractors are doing a good job
  • independent assurance
  • support the policy delivery and impact
  • embed the digital transformation of the Welsh public sector
  • improve experience of users' that have no choice to use a product/service/thing
  • demonstrate impact of product/service/thing
  • demonstrate policy impact and efficacy
  • demonstrate responsible use of public money

For service assessment managers:

  • support teams to focus on the assessment and being ready for it
  • enable assessors to focus on supporting the team (and not having to run the admin of assessments)
  • the delivery model is seamless and easy to use
  • teams and assessors have positive impact from assessment
  • more folks want to be assessed or be assessors
