Overview

With an estimated £2bn of unclaimed benefits in Wales, Welsh Government are doing all they can to make sure people get the financial support they’re entitled to and maximise their household incomes.

The Welsh Benefits Charter was launched in 2024 as part of an agreement between Welsh Government and all 22 local authorities to work together to improve the Welsh Benefits System.

The vision; a person-centred, compassionate, and consistent approach to the design and delivery of Welsh benefits, which enables people to only tell their story once to receive all the financial support to which they are entitled, regardless of where they live in Wales.

We’re part of the Streamlining Welsh Benefits Steering Group to help achieve this vision.

We are focussing on two pieces of work.

Research

We're conducting in-depth research with marginalised groups to identify and address the specific challenges they face when attempting to access benefits. This work will help ensure any improvements we make have inclusivity at their core.

Concept testing

We’re testing and refining a concept with Local Authorities to make it easier for individuals to apply for the school’s essential grant, free school meals and Council tax reduction.

We're committed to working in the open throughout this project. A key principle in the Digital Service Standard for Wales, this means we will share regular updates on our progress, insights, and how we're applying what we learn to improve services for everyone in Wales.
